The ASCII-encoded characters for decimal values 0-31 do not print or render to displays like other characters. These are referred to as control characters and were originally intended as machine control signals to trigger events like system sounds (beep), network acknowledgments (ACK), and end of text (EOT). Note the first 32 characters, decimal values 0-31, have been reserved for non-display characters. By the late 1980s, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) had assumed oversight of the ASCII standard.
